The PREUSE International Symposium : two intensive days to discuss the future of public reuse centres
The PREUSE project recently held its International Symposium on Public Reuse Centres in Mechelen and Brussels, Belgium. On 4–5 June 2026, professionals and researchers exchanged perspectives on ways to make reuse standard practice. A rich programme and attendees from across Europe and beyond offered a valuable opportunity for dialogue between academia and practice.
Day one, in Mechelen, opened with lectures on the theoretical frameworks at stake — urban metabolism, public land, and the labour of maintenance — followed by two cycles of roundtables on leading reuse centres across North-West Europe, and a keynote by Malmö city architect Finn Williams.
Day two, in Brussels, moved from talk to site: visits to municipal reuse infrastructure and hands-on thematic workshops.
A one-time event, the symposium created space to cross disciplinary silos and exchange concrete experiences between people who share the same ambitions and challenges.
